Rain on Your Wedding Day

Rain on your wedding day can seem like an unwelcome guest, especially when you've spent months planning for perfect weather; however, cultures around the world have long considered rain on a wedding day to be a sign of good luck. It's a natural element that can add a unique and memorable twist to your special day. And fortunately, there are plenty of spots to get those wedding day photos you’ve been dreaming of, despite the rain!

How to Prepare for Rain on Your Wedding Day

1. Rain Boots

If you don't have any already, now is the perfect time to invest in a pair of rain boots! Hunter has really cute rain boots and they're something that you can use again in the future and always be reminded of your wedding!

2. Umbrellas

Have umbrellas on hand so you can stay dry while taking photos outside. Check with your venue and photographer to see if they provide umbrellas in the event of rain. Consider having some umbrellas for your guests as well!

3. Keep Guests Informed

If your wedding ceremony is still being held outside despite the rain, keep your guests in the loop so they can plan ahead with proper shoes, jackets, and umbrellas.

4. Have a Backup Plan

Check with your venue to see what their rain plan is. Bear Brook Valley has 3 sheltered options in the event of rain-- the Stables, the Cedar Pavilion, and the Ballroom.

5. Check in with your Vendors

Ask your vendors if the inclement weather will affect how they operate, if any schedule changes need to be made, and if they have any tips on how to keep the day running smoothly.

Wedding hair stylist, Julie Finnerty of Styles on Location says that up dos are the way to go when it looks like rain is in the forecast-- messy buns, braids, chignons. The less hair you have down, the better! And of course, make sure you have lots of hairspray on hand!

Makeup artist, Makeup by McKenna recommends waterproof everything-- mascara and eyeliner! A good setting spray is also important to help lock in the makeup so that it lasts through the rain, sweating, hugging, and kissing. McKenna suggests having a blotting sheet with you throughout the day, saying that, "Instead of layering on powder throughout the day to get rid of shine/moisture on the skin, just use a simple blotting sheet..." Blotting sheets will take away shine on the face, avoiding the need to put on more make up and resulting in a cakey look.

6. Create a Cozy Environment

It may be damp and cold, so try to make it comfortable for your guests! Think blankets, a cider or hot cocoa bar, umbrellas, and cute décor to match the season!

7. Don’t Check the Weather Every Day

Try to resist the temptation to check the weather forecast until the week of your wedding. While it's important to be prepared, constantly checking the weather weeks in advance can lead to unnecessary stress. After all, Mother Nature has her own plans.

And if luck is on your side, the rain might gift you a magical rainbow on your wedding day 🌈
